Often a stones location demands that it's front be regarded as the prominent view. But with each stone being a three-dimensional object, exploiting this sculptural potential is always uppermost in my design considerations.
Below are a few examples of memorial designs along with a selection of carving details showing a variety of subject matter and carving treatments.
Material-Cumbrian Blue/Grey Slate. The surface of the stone being its natural riven finish.
Reverse of the Recorder stone. An instance which allowed for the back of the stone to incorporate an element of design.
-Raised relief- Instance where the surrounding stone is removed leaving the carved form above the surface.
-Sunken relief- This being a situation where the carving is below the surrounding stone surface.
